When buying a new Volvo, chances are you're interested in the safety features involved to keep not only you and your family, but those outside and around the vehicle away from danger. In urban environments, the City Safety auto brake system is very capable of such tasks, detecting people or objects around the vehicle, warning the driver and applying the brakes, should the detected thing or person become to close. Now, the automaker hopes to advance the technology even further.
The current City Safety system can apply the brakes on the vehicle at speeds of up to 19 miles per hour, bringing it to a stop or lessening the impact into the object. Volvo decided that, while good, it wasn't quite good enough. Geno Effler, Volvo North America VP of Communications, has stated that the brand is working increasing the speed at which the vehicle can capably detect outside threats to safety and slow down up to 31 miles per hour. The V40 model can already do this, though it isn't sold in the United States. Soon, all vehicles will potentially be using this new system.
Volvo is also planning to update the Cyclist Detection system, which will also be pushed further. The vehicle will soon be able to detect not just people but animals as well - such as large wildlife like deer, elk, or moose - while driving out in rural environments.
