Scandinavian automaker Volvo is preparing to enhance its lineup next year, and parent company Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. is investing in the bold initiative in two ways.
On one end, we've already heard about the new method for producing larger models like the S80 and XC90 known as Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA). In order to take on the new process, Volvo has already bolstered its own R&D organization.
With all the excitement surrounding SPA, it's not hard to imagine that other segments could easily be ignored. Such, however, is not the case. Volvo also wants to invest in creating higher-quality parts for the emerging C-segment as well. That's why the automaker's parent company Geely is investing in a new R&D center in Sweden, where a collection of roughly 200 engineers will work on developing the next generation of C-segment models.
The new facility is expected to open later this year, so it's not hard to imagine that we might hear more about future C-segment models by this time in 2014. And while that might seem like a ways off at a glance, it's a mere blink of an eye in the automotive world.
