It's called "Volvo Engine Architecture" and it could change the way new Volvo models run, forever. With a new method of creating four cylinder engines, the automaker is making some pretty bold claims about the future of V6 and V8 engines, but all of us at North Point Volvo have no doubt they'll succeed with flying colors.

These new 4-cylinder engines are said to be very high-powered, rivaling that of a V6. Using methods of electrification, Volvo states that they'll have the power of a V6 and even someday a V8, leaving them both obsolete in the technological dust. A new fuel injection system called i-ART, which aims to cut fuel consumption in diesel engines, will just propel the automaker to even loftier heights of innovation.

It all seems a bit complicated, but Derek Crabb, Vice President Powertrain Engineer at Volvo Car Group, explains it in simpler terms. "Each injector has a small computer on top, which monitors injection pressure. Using this information, the self-adapting i-ART system makes sure that the ideal amount of fuel is injected during each combustion cycle."1 Using a higher injection pressure, the engine allows for better fuel economy, lower CO2 emissions, and fantastic performance, all from a smaller, smarter engine.

If you're skeptical to how a four cylinder engine could ever out-perform a V8, then just stay tuned to our blog. We'll bring you all the updates and details on this incredible new system as it comes.
